Day 1 – Via Flaminia tour
3 excursions to discover and learn about the history of wine and oil production in Umbria.
Walking on the ancient ruins of the “Pompei of Umbria” and Via Flaminia, built in 220 B.C. Lunch at a family-run farm, specialized in the production of extra virgin olive oil, legumes and walnuts. Visit to ruins of Carsulae, ancient Roman city situated in the countryside close to Acquasparta.
Departure for the farm and visit to the attached museum dedicated in particular to the “peasant” life of the past centuries. From the many artefacts exhibited, it is possible to glean a real understanding of life as it was for those working the land, tending their animals and working in the kitchen. One room is dedicated to a display of embroidery dating from around the 1900s that includes the tools and implements used by the grandmother of the current owner.
Another important area is dedicated to the implements used in the cultivation of the grapes and, due to a recent renovation, now displays a new find dating from the 16th – 17th century in a magnificent “geared-lever press,” the only example of its kind in all of Umbria. Light lunch with chickpea soup, lentils patè, bruschette bread with extra virgin olive oil.
Day 2 – History of the Wine – in Orvieto
1 day to discover the ancient history of the wine production in Orvieto, called in the past times “Oinarea”, “the city where the wine flows” and its famous Orvieto Classico DOC
Visit to the “Regional Wine Centre and guided wine tasting by an English speaking Sommelier including:
- Orvieto Classico DOC – white wine
- A red wine chosen by the Sommelier among the wines exhibited every month at the “Regional Wine Center”
- The wines are served in matching with a mix of cold cuts, bruschetta bread, local cheese, traditional cheese bread “Lumachelle” typical of Orvieto.
Day 3 – On the Oil Road in Bevagna
1 day in the beautiful area of Bevagna to discover the secrets of extra-virgin olive oil. Guided visit and professional oil tasting at a family-run oil mill producing organic extra-virgin olive oil.
Arrival to a family-run oil mill and guided visit with the owner to the ancient olive tree grove where there is the possibility to see 400 year old trees. Following visit to the mill and explanation of the pressing process.
Light lunch with bruschetta bread with olive oil and vegetables of the season.
Technical oil tasting of 3 different kinds of “olio extra vergine di oliva”:
- Blend “Extra-virgin olive oil” DOP “Colli Martani”. Olives varieties: 40% Moraiolo, 40% Frantoio, 20% Leccino. Taste: herbaceous scent with elegant marks of fresh olive.
- Monocultivar “Moraiolo”. Olives varieties: 100% Moraiolo. Taste: strong olive flavour, elegant scent with marks of herbs
- Monocultivar “Frantoio”. Olive varieties: 100% Frantoio. Taste: fresh scent with a hint of artichoke flavour
